Just a few reflections

To the editor:

As I look at today’s world and reflect on my own upbringing, I am beyond thankful for my parents. My sister, brother and I were raised with the following principles: Put God first in your life and everything else will eventually fall into place; nothing is more important than your relationship with God, so foster that relationship every chance you get; never use the Lord’s name in a derogatory manner as it is a poor reflection on you; go to church regularly because being part of a community is important; love and respect your father and mother because they are your biggest cheerleaders; go out of your way not to hurt others; marriage is a partnership and a sacrament that is to be celebrated and respected; never take anything that doesn’t belong to you; always tell the truth even when it gets you into a bit of trouble; and be happy for the success of others, because jealousy destroys your spirit.

We were taught these things so that on our own, as we grew up, we would be able to recognize right from wrong and good from bad. It wasn’t confusing and it wasn’t difficult. It was a code of behavior that would allow us to thrive in society with others.

If you have not already realized, I’ve just highlighted the Ten Commandments. These were intentional norms for behavior set forth by God through Moses on Mount Sinai for people to find the meaning of life, to possess freedom and expression without harm and to pursue happiness during the one life you have been given.

Whether you are a believer or not, I pray that anyone who is a parent would consider fostering these ideals in raising your family. Our children deserve to live in a society where they can recognize good from evil. Children learn what they live. Teach them acceptance, tolerance and patience so they may find love and friendship in this world.
