Bad look from Washington

To the editor:

This year, Ohio has experienced a drought that has caused farmers in 38 counties so far to look for assistance in keeping their farms running

On Sept. 26, the states of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia were hit by Hurricane Helene. On the same day an article was written by Sherrod Brown in the Daily Advocate: "Fighting for Ohio farmers during severe drought." He is on the Agriculture Committee.

On Sept. 30, on the White House website, a fact sheet read: Update: Biden-Harris administration continued response to Hurricane Helene. "FEMA assistance in Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina may include a one-time $750 payment to help with essential items like food, water, baby formula and other emergency supplies."

On Oct. 1: From the White House briefing room: Alejandro Mayorkas, secretary of homeland security, warns FEMA doesn't have enough funding to last through hurricane season (The Associated Press.)

These are two natural disasters. You would think that these agencies of the federal government, the Departments of Agriculture and Homeland Security, would have sufficient funds in their budget, taxpayer money, that would aid these victims. Isn't it the reason these department were established? Well, you would be wrong. They are loans, they are expected to be paid back. Are you sick to your stomach?
