To the editor:
It sadly appears that the egomaniacal, condescending, disrespectful and demogogic former President Donald J. Trump continues to promote his 2024 presidential campaign by degenerating to an historical lowest common denominator, as he has done by continuing to refer to his political adversaries on a personal basis as crooked and low IQ, without any substantiating evidence whatsoever, and by questioning one's race, as he has recently done by attempting to bring the race of his current presidential adversary, Vice President Kamala Harris, into question.
This is the pattern employed by Trump during previous campaigns, as well, using such vile verbiage to refer to his Republican presidential opponents, in the 2016 primaries, and referring to his Democratic presidential opponent, Hillary Rodham Clinton, as "Crooked Hillary," and her family as "the Clinton Crime Family." Funny, but Trump also has referred to his 2020 presidential opponent, and current president, Joe Biden, as "Crooked Joe," and his family as "the Biden Crime Family," as always, devoid of any such substantiating evidence, and is currently making such comments against his current presidential opponent, Harris, with such incendiary comment, while for Trump, a 34-time convicted felon (and counting), such verbal descriptions actually do apply.
Trump's comments questioning the racial identity of Harris were, incredibly, made during a recent interview conducted before members of the National Association of Black Journalists, reminiscent of other such racially disparaging remarks Trump has made during the years, with perhaps the most glaring, as well as the most distressing, were those made by Trump when he questioned the citizenship of President Barack Obama, stating that he (Trump) had absolute proof that would substantiate such an outrageous claim. Of course, such proof was never revealed, as such did not exist, and Obama then submitted his birth certificate for public scrutiny, which finally confirmed his citizenship status.
As Trump continually likes to question and belittle the knowledge and intelligence of his political opponents, I would like to propose that a public forum be held where Trump and Harris would be tested to determine their knowledge, or lack thereof, of pertinent subjects, including U.S. history, the Constitution, our system of government and the rule of law, among other important topics.
Also, if Harris is such a bad person and candidate, as Trump has said, why did he contribute to her campaigns for attorney general in California in 2011 and 2012, as was reported in the Dispatch.
I am optimistic that if the anticipated further emphasis on the public scrutiny of candidates actually takes place, it will undoubtedly prove most beneficial to Harris, and quite debilitating for the political aspirations of Trump.
