NOW launches election activities

To the editor:

The upcoming election cycle promises to be one of the most important in our lifetimes. So many issues will be at the forefront of political campaigns, especially those important to women and our quality of life now and in the future.

I was honored to have been elected this year to the office of president of Ohio Valley NOW, a local chapter of the National Organization for Women. Together with a new group of leaders and our current members, we strive to maintain and grow our group as the most active chapter in the state of Ohio.

Since 2021, Ohio Valley NOW has engaged in community projects to benefit women as well as advocating for NOW's six core issues. Our priorities are winning economic equality and securing it with an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that will guarantee equal rights for women; championing reproductive health care and reproductive freedom and other women's health issues; opposing racism; fighting bigotry against the LGBTQIA community; and ending violence against women. In 2023, Ohio Valley NOW secured funds to implement a youth voter registration program that was very successful in engaging students at three local colleges, encouraging them to take an active role in our election process, which is their right, responsibility and privilege.

To kick off our efforts this year, we are hosting a campaign season preview meeting for all members and those who would like to explore becoming a member of our active organization. We will host this informational session this Tuesday. The location will be at Friendship Park in Jefferson County, starting at 7 p.m. You can learn about our programs and how to get involved. This is a family friendly event, so please feel free to bring your children to enjoy the playground at the meeting site.

If you support the core issues of NOW, we invite you to join our local efforts. It's time to take action to build a better world and a better Ohio Valley for women and their families. When women succeed, everyone wins.
