EGCC legacy will live on

To the editor:

Human beings have the gift of attributing life and meaning to inanimate things. We love our country, our cars, our land. We love our schools; our alma maters mean much to us.

So, as our community works through the loss of Jeff Tech-Jefferson Community College-Eastern Gateway Community College, there is also much grief and sadness among current and former employees. Not just grief over the loss of jobs, but a feeling that the legacy of many dedicated and caring employees has been lost as well.

"Our legacy is gone," I expressed to another retiree, a faculty member with 35 years under her belt. She stopped me immediately.

"No. Our legacy did not end with this. Our legacy left every time a student walked out the door with a diploma or certificate."

For all who fought the good fight, believed in our mission, who did nothing wrong, who worked tirelessly to help the students from the Ohio Valley, these are words to hold close. Your legacy lives on. No matter the future of EGCC -- you made a difference.
