To the editor:
I agree with the letter to the editor written by James C. Boulson that Johnson Road, which leads from Sunset Boulevard to Trinity Medical Center West, is in terrible shape ("Road needs to be fixed," March 10.) This essential, frequently-used road is in need of a complete resurfacing.
Last October, I was transported by ambulance from the emergency room of Trinity West to a hospital in Pittsburgh for surgery. The two fellows from the ambulance service and I made several jokes about the bumpy condition of Johnson Road as we drove away from the hospital, trying to smooth over a rough situation. But in truth, the road is no laughing matter. When you are lying with an injury on a gurney in the back of a moving ambulance, every bump and jostle to the vehicle caused by poor road conditions is severely felt.
Quite a few vehicles travel over Johnson Road due to the large volume of people using the services of Trinity West, the many doctors' offices located there, Teramana Cancer Center and the YMCA. This integral part of Steubenville draws people in from all over. Johnson Road is less than half a mile long, yet its deteriorated condition reflects poorly on the city and certainly detracts from the $75 million worth of upgrades that Trinity Health Systems recently poured into Trinity West.
Improvements to the road seem warranted in light of its heavy use. How about local government officials find the funding to resurface the entire stretch of Johnson Road?
