Learn about Prime Time levy

2 min read

To the editor:

I am a senior citizen and certainly appreciate any and all services that are provided for seniors, including Prime Time. However, I am confused with the primary election Prime Time has on the ballot, so I am addressing my concerns.

The Prime Time Senior Service Levy will be on the March 19 ballot. It has been estimated by the Jefferson County Auditor that this 1.2-mill, five-year replacement levy would generate almost $2.2 million a year for the next five years. Prime Time has said it will have to close if the levy does not pass. The current levy will provide tax money until the end of the year, $1.9 million as reported by the auditor's office

Why, after 20 years, is the situation so urgent that they have to put it on the ballot in the primary and not November's general election? Grants are available from the Ohio Department of Transportation and Area Agency on Aging for these services.

Oversight of these services should be required by doing independent financial and functional audits. Annual surveys should be conducted by the clients served to see if improvements can be made. How many people are satisfied with the services they receive? Are you satisfied with the menu selections? Is the food hot when you get it? Are you able to book transportation within reasonable requests?

It is time to have an honest discussion. Families of those receiving services need to speak up for those who are unwilling or unable to do so. Seniors do need services, but this is the time to make your voice be heard. Vote with knowledge. Check your facts. Let your voice be heard, yes or no.

There is still time to make it work.
