To the editor:
America's economy is growing -- and fast. The recent jobs report reflects the hard-working American businesses that are powering our economy, as discussed in "The U.S. didn't just avoid a recession -- it's adding hundreds of thousands of new jobs." (Feb. 2)
But uplifting jobs data doesn't just happen or materialize overnight. To maintain America's role as an economic powerhouse, we must work to strengthen our role as a global energy leader.
For example, in Ohio, oil and natural gas are at the heart of investment and economic development. Right now, natural gas and oil support jobs for more than 352,000 Ohioans, equivalent to 5 percent of state employment, and has an economic impact of $55 billion. This includes direct employees, supply chain workers and other jobs throughout the economy. Nationally, the sector supports almost 11 million jobs and contributes nearly $2 trillion to the U.S. economy.
Clearly, as the economy continues to grow, U.S. oil and natural gas will help power innovation and expansion across the country. To reach our full potential, we first need smart policies from state and federal leaders to help ensure America has abundant, affordable energy.
To start, Congress could modernize America's permitting process so that we can build all kinds of energy infrastructure. Next, the Biden administration could open more federal lands to oil and natural gas leasing to provide for America's energy future. Finally, policymakers could stop imposing overly burdensome regulations that jeopardize American energy development.
Leaders in Columbus and Washington should prioritize energy leadership to protect our shared future.
