Remember: Faith over fear

2 min read

To the editor:

October has been designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Perhaps you have noticed the pink decor in stores. But you especially see the pink ribbons worn by breast cancer survivors.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was started in 1985 with the help of then-first lady Betty Ford -- a breast cancer survivor -- and the American Cancer Society.

One out of eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Early detection of breast cancer can be done with mammograms. Early detection can save lives.

President Joe Biden announced a Proclamation on National Breast Cancer Awareness Month last week. Biden stated that cancer touches nearly every family in America, including mine.

Biden continued his proclamation with this quote, "For the lives we can save and those we have lost, let this National Breast Cancer Awareness Month be a moment of unity that rallies the country to end cancer as we know it. Together we can give patients, survivors and their families the care, hope and support they deserve."

Trinity Health System is holding a Faith over Fear pop-in event from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday in the Trinity East lobby. While at the pop-in event, you will learn about breast cancer prevention. You will be treated and pampered with giveaways and services from vendor tables.

The Breast Cancer Awareness and Community Expo sponsored by the Women In Action Against Cancer Coalition will be held Oct, 18 at the Fort Steuben Mall. This event will start at 10 a.m. and end with wreath ceremony at 4 p.m. A day of health education will be a celebration and remembrance of those touched by breast cancer.

For those who are breast cancer survivors, the Tony Teramana Cancer Center offers a monthly support meeting on the first Tuesday starting at 5:30 p.m.

From a breast cancer survivor, remember: Faith over fear. Remember to get your mammogram. Remember there is hope. Remember you are not alone.
