Democracy in peril

3 min read

To the editor:

I find it quite ironic and hypocritical, indeed, that our egotistical, morally bankrupt ex-President Donald J. Trump obviously appears to be running for his possible return to the White House based solely on personal revenge and retribution on his part, while demagogically stating, as per usual, that our government is persecuting him, because it is he who somehow stands in their way of prosecuting us, the American people, for what, of course, he offers no explanation. Such loathsome rhetoric is typical when coming from a tyrant, but not from one who even remotely espouses and supports a democratic system of government, such as is ours.

How is it that Trump expects us to believe such to be true, when it has been reported that literally hundreds of people had been injured, including138 law enforcement officers, with five dying as a result of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection on our nation's capitol, which he essentially ordered, but failed to participate in himself, although he had so informed his loyal supporters that they could count on him to participate and, presumably, physically lead the insurrection, which, of course, he did not?

In addition, many of those who committed the most heinous acts during the horrific invasion have been incarcerated, while Trump, who inspired and encouraged this grievous threat to our system of democracy, continues to be a free man, thus far, while participating as a candidate for the nomination of the Republican Party in the upcoming 2024 presidential election with the support of a great many of his party's loyalists at this point.

In addition, to this day the ego-driven former president continues to refuse to graciously concede, as all others have done before him, that he legitimately lost the 2020 presidential election, in spite of literally all evidence to the contrary that the election was, indeed, fair and honest, and no such fraud that he has claimed, and continues to claim (but never verify)had taken place, placing himself over what is best, and right, for our great country.

As a result, Trump has been indicted for conspiring to overturn the 2020 presidential election, by attempting to intimidate election officials in key battleground states, creating a slate of false electors in swing states, as well as his attempt to block the official certification of President Joe Biden, by then-Vice President Mike Pence, resulting in four current indictments and 91 felony counts, making former President Richard Nixon, who was essentially forced to resign from office in 1974 because of the Watergate scandal, look like a choirboy when juxtaposed with Trump.

Trump, with his mob boss-like mentality and his arrogant self-absorption continues to threaten the very fabric of our democratic system of government and seemingly, place himself above the law while claiming victimization, when it is he who constantly victimizes others while placing our democratic system of government at risk, perhaps like never before in the history of our cherished nation.
