Volunteers needed

3 min read

To the editor:

I am writing to urge the citizens of Jefferson County to get involved in the efforts to get out the vote in our area. We are currently facing a critical fight that will determine the future of our democracy, starting with a special election on Aug. 8. This election is particularly significant as Republicans are attempting to undermine the fundamental principle of "one person, one vote."

The proposed measure on the ballot aims to increase the threshold for a citizen-led constitutional amendment to become law, requiring a 60 percent majority of votes. Such a change would make it much more challenging for the voices of Jefferson County residents to be heard and for necessary changes to be made through the amendment process. This threat to the principle of equal representation and the power of citizen engagement cannot be taken lightly.

However, this is just the beginning of what promises to be the most crucial voting cycle of our lives as we approach the 2024 presidential election. It is essential that we all take action to engage voters and increase voter turnout. By doing so, we can ensure that Jefferson County has a say in shaping the future of our state and our nation.

To make a difference, we need volunteers who are willing to dedicate their time and energy to this cause. There are various ways you can contribute and be part of our digital volunteer community. If you are able to commit to hosting two canvassing shifts per week, consider becoming a volunteer leader. If that level of commitment is not feasible for you, don't worry. You can still sign up to knock on doors to educate and encourage voters to exercise their rights in the electoral process.

Additionally, if you prefer to reach out to voters through phone calls, sign up for one of our phone banks. You will receive training, and you can make calls at your convenience. Every call made and every conversation held will play a crucial role in getting the word out about the special election in August and the 2024 elections.

The importance of voter engagement cannot be overstated. It is our duty as citizens of Jefferson County to stand up for our country by actively participating in the democratic process. By investing our time and effort, we can ensure that every eligible voter in our community is informed, empowered, and inspired to cast their vote.

Together, we can safeguard the principles that our democracy is built upon. For information or to sign up, please e-mail me at baird9992@frontier.com
