Pride belongs in Jefferson County

To the editor:

All good people should be concerned over how the freedom to exist for the LGBTQIA+ community is in jeopardy in our area. Recent events have shown that we must take a stand against discrimination and ensure that our community remains a safe and welcoming place for all individuals.

It is disheartening to witness the obstacles faced by LGBTQIA+ people. Recently, a family friendly drag show in Wheeling had to be canceled due to death threats, highlighting the presence of bigotry and intolerance. Just this week, the efforts of a church leader in Wellsville to pressure city officials into shutting down Columbiana County's first Pride Festival demonstrate the ongoing resistance to progress and acceptance. That preacher, that man of God, in prayer at a public meeting, referred to anyone not straight as "enemies" and "sinners." They're starting to say the quiet part out loud.

For the past year, a group with ties to the traditional Catholic community has been aggressively campaigning to eradicate any evidence of Pride Month observance and diversity-related books from the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County. Despite facing disrespectful behavior and accusations, the library board has stood firm in its commitment to inclusivity, recognizing the importance of providing resources for all members of our community.

In light of these challenges, it is crucial that we unite in support of LGBTQIA+ rights. Ohio Valley NOW, a local chapter of the National Organization for Women, has been standing alongside the library board and advocating against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. We also will be participating in the Dean Martin Parade on June 17, spreading a message of diversity, equity and inclusion as part of our six core priorities, which include fighting for constitutional equality for women, economic equality, reproductive freedom, ending violence against women, opposing racism and fighting bigotry against the LGBTQIA+ community in any form. As NOW chapter president, I encourage those of you who share these values to join us in support. We are proud to be allies and encourage you to become one, too.

I also call upon other organizations, particularly political entities like the local Democratic Party, to stand up and actively fight for LGBTQIA+ rights. It is vital that we create a collective voice that emphasizes equality, celebrates diversity, and denounces bigotry. You can send a powerful message of unity and acceptance and open the doors for anyone in Jefferson County to lead their authentic life.

As we celebrate Pride Month, let's remember its true meaning. Pride is not just about self-expression, but about recognizing and affirming the fundamental rights of all individuals. By embracing Pride events and standing by our library system's decisions, we can reaffirm our commitment to creating a community that cherishes diversity, respects all identities and ensures safety and the freedom to exist for every person. Here's to a happy Pride Month.
