To the editor:
Throughout the years, employees and former employees of the W.H. Sammis Power Plant have graciously given their gifts of time, effort and monetary donations, to the Urban Mission.
Our Back-to-School Bash, our Christmas toy distributions, and our weekly food distributions have all benefited because of their generosity. As one of their last acts of service to our community, on the day their facility closed, June 2, Urban Mission Ministries received a hand-delivered donation of more than 70 individual checks totaling more than $14,000.
These donations left such an impression on the Urban Mission staff. Not only because this type of donation does not happen often for the Urban Mission, but also because of who the donations were from -- employees of the Sammis Plant. We give special thanks to Lisa McNicol and Local Union 457.
And while we grieve with the individuals and families impacted by the closing of this facility, we give thanks for their generosity in the midst of hard times.
The Rev. Ashley Steele
