The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County recently passed a resolution to reaffirm its commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. The resolution can be read in full on the library's website or upon request in person at all library locations.
As a preamble to the resolution, the library provides information from the governor of Ohio, the American Library Association, and the State Library of Ohio regarding equity, diversity and inclusion.
The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County acknowledges the content of its materials may not be acceptable to each individual. The library does, however, value and stands firm that an individual cannot restrict the freedom of what another can read which is a basic constitutional right.
Books for children and young adults address cultural issues in language that is at an age-appropriate level for them. Parents who wish to monitor the items their children read and borrow from the library can do so by placing a message on the child's library card that staff will adhere to respectfully.
Public libraries are a welcoming place that provide access to reliable resources and information to all people of all ages.
