Indian Creek levy should be renewed

As voters in the Indian Creek Local School district cast their ballots in the Nov. 4 election, they are being asked to approve the renewal of the 7.9-mill continuing levy for continuing operating expenses.

There are many reasons they should say yes.

First passed in 1995, the five-year levy is expected to generate about $3.28 million during its life. That works out to about $629,795 per year, money that’s critical to the operations of the district’s schools. Those dollars go to help cover staffing, utilities, buses, curriculum and programming, officials explained.

“We’re very happy and proud of what we’re able to offer our students, and it would be very hard to do that without the levy,” Superintendent T.C. Chappalear explained.

Since the levy is a renewal, voting yes will not increase the amount of property taxes residents already are paying, officials explained.

Voting against the levy, they add, will not lead to a decrease in the amount of property taxes residents of the district pay.

That’s because the state requires districts to collect a minimum of 20 mills on the assessed value of Class 1 property. What a no vote would do, however, is lead to public utilities and businesses not contributing tax dollars through the levy — that’s because they fall into other property tax classes.

The 1,900-plus students of the Indian Creek Local School District receive a quality education, thanks to a staff and administration that is dedicated to their success. Money generated from the renewal of the levy will ensure that work can continue, and that’s why voters should approve the issue on Nov. 4.
