As we've all been surviving under the rays of the hot summer sun in recent days, one organization has been working to offer extra protection for area residents who are spending their days outdoors.
The Hancock County Family Support Center, a division of the Brooke Hancock Family Resource Network, has installed portable sunscreen stations at five area parks.
Throughout much of the year, visitors to Chester City Park, Clarke Field in Newell and New Cumberland City Park, as well as Marland Heights Park and Starvaggi Memorial Park in Weirton, will be able to find the yellow, battery-operated stations available for public use.
Family Support Center staff are responsible for maintaining the stations by keeping them stocked with sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 30.
While many of us spend more time outdoors in the summer months, we don't always think about the importance of applying sunscreen, but it's something that should always be on our minds in an effort to protect our skin and reduce the risk of skin cancer.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends using broad spectrum sunscreens with an SPF level of at least 15, reapplying sunscreen at least every two hours -- with more frequent applications if you are sweating or swimming.
The American Academy of Dermatology, meanwhile, recommends use of an SPF 30 or higher, and, preferably, a water-resistant variety whenever possible.
Even the littlest activity, such as going out for your mail or walking your dog, exposes you to ultraviolet light from the sun, potentially leading to damage to your skin.
Regular use of sunscreen is one way we all can protect ourselves.
