Have a safe day on water in Ohio

They say the two best days in a boat-owner’s life are the day they buy and the day they sell. But somewhere in between is a good day on which boaters finish their Ohio Boating Education Course and know they are better prepared for a safe summer on the water.

“Spring is the perfect time to get prepared for a fun and safe boating season,” said Andy Foos, Ohio Department of Natural Resources boating education coordinator. “The Ohio Boating Education Course is a great way to make sure you understand key safety measures, navigate legal requirements, and become a more confident boater. It’s not just about meeting the law — it’s about enjoying the water responsibly.”

Courses are available through May. Boaters can find the right course for their region and register here: ohiodnr.gov/discover-and-learn/safety-conservation/about-ODNR/news/boating-ed-courses-2025

It’s a day-long course. While making sure their own skills are up to snuff, boaters can also take the opportunity to inspect their equipment and make sure registration is up to date.

Of course, even after a refresher course on the rules, boaters must still follow those rules.

Ohio has plenty of opportunities to enjoy your boat. Get off on the right foot this season.
