Dog lovers will be gathering this weekend at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds for the return of the Friendship Cluster All Breed Dog Show.
The four-day event, which opens Friday, will include more than 500 canines representing more than 100 breeds and as young as 4 months. It will feature AKC all-breed shows, obedience competitions and rally trials, and will, organizers say, attract participants from around the country and beyond to Friendship Park in Smithfield.
While competition is a big part of the show -- championship points will be awarded -- the event will offer the opportunity for Tri-State Area residents to see the dogs in action, whether they are being judged against set standards for their particular breed, performing obedience tasks or navigating a course.
There will be events for puppies, in which the next generation of competitors will get the chance to prepare for the time when they will be able to show for points. Junior handlers, those who are between the ages of 9 and 17, also will be a part of the event.
Attendees also will have the opportunity to meet some of the competitors and get to know more about the individual breeds.
In addition, there will be vendors and drawings for prizes. Expect to see a dock diving event each day for the canine competitors. Attendees also will have the opportunity to allow their non-competing dogs to try out their diving skills, organizers explained.
Officials with the presenting organizations -- the Fort Steuben Kennel Association and the St. Clairsville and Trumbull County kennel clubs -- said the event, which will be open each day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Monday, will be fun for families and dog lovers, and will offer a chance to show off the amenities of Friendship Park, including its beautiful lake and miles of trails.
The event has quickly become a late-summer tradition, and, according to Gael Damron, vendor chair, a good way for dogs and their owners to bond with each other, and for dog lovers from various parts of the country to meet.
It's a chance to spend some time with your friends while you celebrate man's best friend, and a good way to relax over this Labor Day weekend.
