It wasn't that long ago that a group of area residents started to ask what they could do to help bring a new sense of vitality to downtown Steubenville.
Their idea of bringing a monthly street festival to the city and offering residents from across the Tri-State Area an opportunity to relax and unwind, spend some quality time with members of their family, enjoy the company of friends and neighbors and celebrate what's good about the region was launched in 2018.
Since then, First Fridays on Fourth has grown to become one of the area's premiere events from late spring through early autumn.
That annual tradition will return for the 2024 season on Friday. Scheduled to run from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., this month's installment will be built around the theme of Street Music.
A presentation of the hard-working volunteers of the Harmonium Project, each segment of the six-month series again will feature food trucks, vendor booths, games, local craft brewers, art displays, the chance to create your own art and entertainment -- including bands from area high schools and top local and regional performers who will help to bring energy and excitement up and down Fourth Street.
On June 7, the theme will be the Roaring Twenties. July 5 will be Freedom Friday, Aug. 2 will be Nineties Night, Sept. 6 will be Storybook Night and Oct. 4 will be the annual season-ending Fall Festival.
And it will be in keeping with the goal of building community pride and showing off a positive side of the city, of looking at what's possible and of showing the potential downtown Steubenville offers.
That First Fridays has continued to grow and expand through the downtown is a tribute to the volunteers who organize the events, the local businesses that continue to participate and, maybe most important, to the support of residents from across the Tri-State Area who continue to make the trip to downtown Steubenville each month to enjoy a Friday evening outside.
