Last week, the WVU Extension Service in Hancock County offered an ATV safety program, with five area young people attending the training at the 4-H Camp Aura in New Cumberland.
The program has been available through the WVU Extension for the last few years, thanks to support from Polaris, and has been taught throughout the state. It was the first time it was offered in Hancock County, and we hope to see it return in the future.
Our area, while full of paved highways and roads, also includes a significant amount of wooded areas, dirt paths and uneven topography.
The use of all-terrain vehicles is a common sight in some portions of Hancock and Brooke counties.
It is important for those operating these vehicles to do so safely and be knowledgeable of any traffic laws which might be in place. Making certain that begins at a young age is just as important.
Safety training programs such as this one offered by the WVU Extension, which is available for anyone at least 10 years of age, are vital to ensuring ATVs are operated as safely as possible and that the possibility of injuries is reduced.
