Arthur Leroy Watson, Jr., affectionately known as "Lee" or "Art," passed away peacefully on Friday, September 4, 2026, at Weirton Medical Center following a brave and courageous battle with cancer.
Lee was a devoted husband, father, and public servant who dedicated much of his life to protecting and serving the communities he loved. His career in law enforcement spanned many years and included numerous positions throughout West Virginia.
Lee began his law enforcement career with the Moundsville City Police Department. He later served as Chief Deputy of the Marshall County Sheriff's Department and the Wetzel County Sheriff's Department. He went on to serve as Administrator of the Hancock County Jail before becoming a Deputy with the Hancock County Sheriff's Department. Lee served the county for many years in roles including Detective, Chief Deputy under Sheriff Fletcher and as School Resource Officer.
After retiring, Lee continued serving his community as a Security Officer at the Hancock County Courthouse, a position he held because of his continued dedication to helping and protecting others.
While Lee was proud of his career and dedication to law enforcement, some of his greatest joys came from spending time with the people he loved. He enjoyed fishing, playing golf, and, most of all, spending time with his family. Family game nights were special times filled with laughter, friendly competition, and memories that will be treasured forever.
Lee was preceded in death by his beloved wife of more than 40 years, Loretta, his parents, affectionately known as "Jack and Bernie," and his nephews, Timothy Shreve and Joseph Strapazzon.
Lee leaves behind his pride and joy and only child, Amanda (Shawn) Core of Weirton. Amanda was the light of his life and brought him immeasurable love and happiness.
He is also survived by his sisters, Corinne (Rick) Shreve and Teresa (Warren) Elliott; his brother, Mike (Deneen) Watson; his goddaughter and niece, Emily (Jake) Prestage; his nephews, Brock (Emily) Watson and Adam Strapazzon; as well as extended family, friends, former colleagues, and the many people whose lives he touched throughout his years of service.
Lee will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his commitment to law enforcement, and his willingness to serve and protect others. His badge may have been retired, but his heart for service never was.
His family takes comfort in knowing that Lee made a difference in the lives of so many. His legacy of service, loyalty, laughter, and love will live on through the family and friends who were blessed to know him.
Rest easy, Art! Your watch is over.
Visitation will be held at the Turley Funeral Home, 109 N. Chester Street, New Cumberland, WV 26047, Monday 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral service is Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Turley Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lee's name can be made to WV CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children) to continue his dedication to public service.
