DAVE KURCINA
David Paul Kurcina, 61, of Follansbee, West Virginia, passed away peacefully at home after battling a three-and-a-half-year battle with cancer on Monday, May 4, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Born April 30, 1965, in Steubenville, Ohio, he was the son of the late Michael Joseph and Angeline (Berarducci) Kurcina. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Michael Kurcina, on September 6, 2025, and his brother-in-law, Gary Haught.
David was a 1983 graduate of Brooke High School and went on to earn an Associate Degree in Computer Programming from Jefferson Technical College. He was a lifelong member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. David dedicated 38 years of service to Wheeling Nippon as a computer programmer. He also faithfully served the community of Follansbee as City Clerk for 26 years and was an active member of the Follansbee Volunteer Fire Department.
A respected official in local athletics, David served for many years as a WVSSAC football referee, including officiating the 2024 WV 4A State Championship game and being selected for the 2025 OVAC All-Star Football Game. He also officiated numerous playoff games in West Virginia and Ohio and worked as a softball umpire and basketball referee throughout the Ohio Valley. Dave was an avid fan and loved to cheer on Notre Dame Football and St. Louis Cardinals Baseball teams.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Lesley (Haught) Kurcina; his son, Michael Kurcina of Follansbee; his daughter, Lindsay Kurcina of Weirton; his sister, Mary Ann (Kenneth) Fletcher of Wellsburg; his nephews, Sam and Christopher Fletcher; his sister-in-law, Nancy (John) Schwertfeger; his brothers-in-law, Bill (Cindy) Haught and Greg (Pam) Haught; his cherished pet, Marlee Jo; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held Thursday, May 7, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Mullenbach Funeral Home, 669 Main Street, Follansbee, WV. A Catholic Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, May 8, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church 1017 Jefferson St. Follansbee, WV 26037, with Father Gerald Muoka officiating.
Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Since Dave was such an avid sports fan his family requests that everyone wears their favorite sports attire to his visitation and service in honor of him.
