GEORGE WEIGEL JR.
George Raymond Weigel, Jr., 89, of Weirton, WV, passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at Valley Hospice North in Steubenville, OH. He was born on February 15, 1937, in New Cumberland, WV, the son of the late George Raymond Weigel, Sr. and Delia Wolff Weigel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Lou Teel and Vivian Weigel.
George was a proud graduate of New Cumberland High School, Class of 1956. On April 18, 1959, he married the love of his life, Sondra Lee Long, with whom he built a devoted and loving family. He dedicated nearly 40 years of service to Weirton Steel Corporation, where he worked as a foreman, primarily in Tandem Mill #7.
George also honorably served in the United States Army Reserve for 12 years. He was a Past Governor of the Loyal Order of Moose and was recognized with the organization’s highest honor, the Pilgrim Degree.
Following his retirement, George embraced life to the fullest. He and Sondra enjoyed traveling together, frequently visiting Myrtle Beach and Ocean City, as well as taking memorable cruises. A devoted fan of the WVU Mountaineers, George especially cherished attending football games and arriving early to watch his son perform in the WVU Marching Band.
George found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved fishing–not for the catch, but for the peace and relaxation it brought. An avid reader, he had a deep appreciation for history, science fiction, and many other genres, reading thousands of books throughout his lifetime. He was truly a well-read and thoughtful man.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
George is survived by his beloved wife, Sondra Lee Long Weigel; his sons, Patrick Weigel (Sharon), Terry Weigel (Marie), and Paul Weigel (Danalyn); 10 grand- children; 19 great- grandchildren; and his sister, Sylvia Jean Votruba.
