John William Thompson III, 85 of Follansbee, WV, passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at WVU Medicine, Weirton Medical Center.
John was born on June 6, 1940 in Steubenville, OH. He was the son of the late John William Thompson and Martha (Metz) Thompson.
John retired after many years of service to Weirton Steel Corp. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Steubenville, OH. Many will remember John for his love of telling jokes and making people laugh, listening to Bluegrass Music and sitting outside and many hobbies; but most of all, enjoyed life and talking to his best buddy.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas R. Thompson.
John is survived by his wife, Sharon (Kane) Thompson, four sons, John W. Thompson IV and his wife, Kimberly, Patrick B. Thompson and his wife, Debra, Shawn P. Thompson and his wife, Miranda and James E. Thompson and his wife, Bridget, 12 grandchildren, John W. Thompson V., Erin Louk and her husband, Toby, Patrick Thompson and his wife, Olivia, Tyler Thompson, Morgan Kobuck and her husband, Seth, Marshall Thompson, Skyler Russell and Ava, Aiden, Zoe, Koral and Isaak Thompson, four great grandchildren, Elijah, Jonah, and Aubrey Louk and Remi Cunningham, three sisters, Mary Hazlett of Johnstown, OH, Linda Stewart, Fort Collies, CO and Patricia Deptula of Toronto, OH, a brother, Richard "Dick" Thompson of Battle Creek, MI and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Gathering will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025 from 12:00 Noon until time of Memorial Service at 1:00 PM at the James Funeral Home of Follansbee, WV (304) 527-1717 with a luncheon to follow at Weirton Senior Center. John's remains were donated to the WV Human Gift Registry to aid students in the medical fields. A gift to others during a time of loss.
