JOHN WHERRY

John B. Wherry, 82, of Toronto, OH, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at his home.

John was born February 17, 1943, in Derry, PA, to the late Chauncey Wherry, Sr. and Edna (Wilkinson) Wherry. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Frances (Fowler) Wherry in 2012, and brothers, Chauncey Wherry, Jr and Fritz Wherry.

He was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Jefferson Hills, PA. After graduation John enlisted in the US Army where he served in Japan during the Vietnam War era.

After an honorable discharge, John relocated to the Toronto area to work for Ohio Steak & BBQ in Toronto. He later became a custodian for the Toronto City School District and later retired in 2011 with 25 years of service.

His memberships included the Toronto First Methodist Church and the Toronto American Legion Post #86. John was also a recipient of the first Herald-Star Community Star Awards in 1998.

John leaves behind four daughters, Cindy (Mark) Stuck of Toronto; twins, Melanie (Scott) Owen of Cincinnati, OH, and Maureen (Fred) Taggart of Toronto, and Melissa Wherry also of Toronto; three sisters, Mary Jane Elsesser, Kathie Neidermeyer, and Pamela Stetor; brother, Mark Wherry and brother-in-law, Harry Fowler; four grandchildren, Mark Edward (Shawne) Stuck, Lauren Brooke (Daniel) Weintraub, Erin (Nicole) Taggart, and John (Kylea) Wherry; seven great-grandchildren, Preston, Lucas, Koby, Makiah, Lexie, Miley and Landon.

Family and friends will be received on Sunday, from 1 PM to 4 PM at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Toronto with John’s service to follow at 4 PM. Rev. Kevin Rinkes will officiate, and Military Honors will be presented by the Toronto American Legion Post #86.
