NATHANIEL “NATE” FREEMAN, SR.

Nathaniel “Nate” Freeman Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on January 5, 2025, in Steubenville, Ohio. He was born on March 8, 1949, in Steubenville to the late James Ivory Freeman and Catherine (Almon) Freeman.

Nate was a proud graduate of Steubenville High School’s Class of 1967. He was a dedicated employee with an exceptional work ethic. He retired from Koppers after 43 years of service and was a trailblazer as the first Black person hired there. His commitment to excellence extended beyond his career; he was a lifelong supporter of Steubenville Big Red sports. Known as the #1 Big Red fan, Nate was one of the longest-serving and most devoted football boosters, attending games regardless of distance or weather and sponsoring many players through the booster association.

Nate will be remembered as a kind, generous, and dependable man who valued family above all else. He led by example, teaching forgiveness and the importance of perseverance. Known for his optimism and willingness to help others, he provided guidance not only to his family but also to friends and the young athletes he supported. Not only was he a pillar in the family and boosters, but he was also a pillar in the community.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers James Freeman Jr., Wayne Freeman, Theodore Freeman, and Ronald Freeman. Nate shared 54 wonderful years of marriage with his wife and soulmate, Diane Freeman. He leaves behind his loving wife; children: Lenee Mills, Nathaniel “Nate” (Kate) Freeman Jr., and Dawn Nicole Freeman; grandchildren: Brittany (Joshua) Thomas, Myles Freeman, Trey Freeman, Jess Turner Jr., and Jiovanni Turner; great-grand- children: Emma and Michael Thomas; brothers: Ray Freeman and Lavert Freeman; sisters: Betty Sue Bruce, Jeanette Harris, and Ozella Freeman; as well as brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will cherish his memory.

He was the glue for his family and the community. May Nate’s legacy inspire us to continue his work.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 18, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Gregory-Martin Funeral Chapel, 255 S. 7th Street, Steubenville, Ohio.
