KATHLEEN JENNINGS
Kathleen Jennings of North Olmsted (formerly of Steubenville) passed away on September 25, 2024. She was 76 years old. She was preceded in death by her parents, O. Robert and Elizabeth Green Jennings and brother, Denis Jennings, along with cherished friends and pets.
“Kathy” “Aunt Be” Jennings was born on November 13, 1947 at Gill Memorial Hospital. From early on, Kathy was dedicated to protecting the least among us. Her passion was the promotion of peace and love among all people and creatures, with special attention to the powerless and invisible.
A 1966 graduate of Steubenville High School, and a 1970 graduate of The College of Steubenville, Kathy embarked on a career in social work in Pittsburgh, PA. During that time, Kathy was called to action, joining the anti-nuclear proliferation movement. Her experiences as a non-violent activist landed her in federal prison more than once, but this was a sacrifice she made to draw attention to a vital cause. Kathy and fellow activist Vincent Eirene also ran a halfway house for men in the Manchester section of Pittsburgh.
In the mid-90s, Kathy returned to Pottery Addition. There, she cared for her mother until her passing in 2001. Kathy’s work turned to animals. Working with area veterinarians, Kathy went on a spay and neuter crusade. Her work was dedicated and tireless. As the unofficial “Mayor” of the Pottery, Kathy loved her home, working in her garden, chatting with kids and neighbors, and loving her pets. Her door was always open, and all were welcome to anything she could offer.
Kathy’s health took a turn in 2022, and she had to join her family in Northeast Ohio. She spent two wonderful years with them and new friends. She attended countless games and became a celebrity among her nieces’ friends. She was a wonderful conversationalist, always asking after loved ones and pets.
Kathy leaves behind nieces, Amy Jennings (Manuel Diaz) of Lake Worth, FL, Ginny Jennings (Nick Carrier) of Brooklyn, NY, nephew Robert (Robin) Jennings of North Ridgeville, OH, great-nieces, Liliana Florencio, Kayla Diaz, Samantha Jennings, and Alexandra Jennings, and great-nephew, Alexander Diaz. Her best friend, Mary Ann Curfman of Steubenville, caring friend, Laura Garcia of Westlake, and her “granddaughter” Kira from Pottery. Also surviving are her brother, David Jennings of Houston, TX and nephews, Patrick, Breandan, and Colin Jennings.
Friends/family will Celebrate Kathy at the Holiday Inn in Weirton on Friday Nov. 8th from 5:30-7:30 PM. The Rite of Committal will be held that morning at 10:30 AM at Mt. Calvary. In lieu of flowers, consider an act of service in your community.
