Sara Ann (Finley) Gundling, 90, of Wellsburg, WV, passed away peacefully on September 14th at her daughter Becky's home in Darnestown, MD, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born October 27, 1930. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband George Gundling, and her daughter Cheryl, who died in 1972 after a lengthy illness, her sisters U.S. Navy Commander (Retired) Frances (Finley) Lacefield and Mary Alice (Finley) Pittman as well as her brothers Thomas Andrew Finley and James Robert Finley. She is survived by her brother Michael Mont Finley and his wife Linda.
Sara and George Gundling were married 60 years and made their home in Wellsburg. Mrs. Gundling leaves 6 children, her son George Gundling and wife Bonnie of Plano, Texas; her daughter Diane Gundling Cadenhead and husband Milton of Darnestown, MD; her son Mark Gundling of Wellsburg, WV; her daughter Becky Gundling Cheripko and husband Darrell of Darnestown, MD; her daughter Lori Gundling Feola and husband Dennis of Towson, MD and her son Mike Gundling and wife Jen of Yorktown, VA, 21 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Born and raised in New Martinsville, WV, the daughter of Marie (Hunt) Finley and Andrew Walker Finley, Mrs. Gundling attended Magnolia High School and graduated from Wheeling Hospital School of Nursing, before beginning her career as a registered nurse, while raising her family in Wellsburg. While her initial occupation was in nursing, her true vocation was being a Mom to her 7 children. Leaving nursing to care for Cheryl for several years, she was devoted to her family above all else. A kind, gentle and generous mother, she supported and encouraged her children in all their endeavors. A devoted wife, she was her husband George's biggest fan as he coached high school football for more than two decades at Wintersville and Toronto High Schools (Ohio). A devout Catholic, she was a woman of deep faith who helped instill the same in her children.
Sara was an active part of the Wellsburg community and member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Wellsburg. She served as a volunteer at both St. John School and the Church for decades. She helped organize numerous fundraisers for charities including the A.I.M. Women's Center in Steubenville. Sara Gundling will be deeply missed, but forever remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Visitation will be held on Sunday September 19th, at 2-4 & 6-8 pm at Reasner Funeral Home 1515 Charles St. Wellsburg. A prayer service will be conducted from 7:30 – 8:00 during the visitation hours. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated on Monday September 20th, at 10:00am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Wellsburg with Rev. Father Arul Anthony as celebrant. Interment will be at Franklin Cemetery in Wellsburg.
