Ernest Fisher

Ernest Franklin “Ernie” Fisher, 96, of Palatka, FL, passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2019, at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center, following an extended illness.

Born in Spencer, WV, Ernie attended high school in Steubenville, OH, through the 11th grade, then worked as an electric bridge crane operator with Republic Steel in Canton, OH.

In 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served admirably as a surgical technician in World War II campaigns in Central Europe, including “Rhineland” and “Ardennes,” what you may know as “The Battle of the Bulge,” popularized by the recent mini-series “Band of Brothers.” It was during this single action that U.S. forces sustained over 100,000 casualties, more than any Army campaign in U.S. history.

Following his military service, Ernie worked as a carpenter with local #182 and #26 for over 50 years.

Ernie was also a pilot and enjoyed flying his plane, as well as building ultra-lite aircraft. In his leisure time, he also enjoyed playing golf. Ernie attended the College Road Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 23 years, Ida M. Traxler Fisher; his parents, Lincoln Fisher and Minnie Yerian Fisher; a brother, Kenneth Fisher; and two sisters, Opal Cochran and Maxine Story.

Ernie is survived by three step-children, Rena Dennard of Palatka, Judy Remington (Theron) of Ocala, and John Traxler (Jackie) of Palatka; five grandchildren, five great- grandchildren; and two nieces, Donna Sembar (George) of Danville, IL, and Kim Weaver of Follansbee, WV.

Services were held Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at Johnson-Overturf Chapel, in Palatka, with Bro. C.L. Overturf Jr. officiating.

The family received friends Wednesday, from 1 p.m., until the time of services at 2 p.m. Interment followed at Palatka Memorial Gardens, with military honors conducted by the U.S. Army.

Memories and condolences may be expressed to the family at Ernie’s Book of Memories page at www.johnsonoverturf funerals.com.

Arrangements are entrusted to Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka, FL.
