STEUBENVILLE -- The Ohio High School Athletic Association is looking into an incident that occurred late in the Steubenville-New Philadelphia boys soccer match on Tuesday night.
With less than six minutes to go in the game, a Steubenville player contacted an official that was displaying a penalty card at another player following a collision near the goal.
Video of the incident circulated on social media on Wednesday, where the Steubenville player ran at and slam into the official. The referee was sent to the ground.
The referee continued to officiate the final minutes of the game and the game continued following the incident.
New Philadelphia won the game, 2-1, to advance to the district championship.
The OHSAA said on Wednesday that it was aware of the incident and in communication with the school about punishment for the student athlete involved. The OHSAA will decide on further discipline after finding out what disciplinary action is taken by the school first, the statement said. The statement indicated that the school’s punishment “will be significant.”
“Physical violence against an official is among the most serious offenses that a coach, player or fan can commit and the OHSAA will pursue this to the fullest extent,” the statement circulating on social media said.
