STEUBENVILLE -- Nov. 2 is “Color the World Orange Day” and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome awareness in Jefferson County.

CPRS is a chronic neurological pain condition that typically develops after an injury or surgery and can cause severe, persistent pain, swelling, extreme sensitivity and changes in mobility and everyday function.

Advocate Daisy Luyster said her sister, Dawn, has been battling CPRS since an achilles tendon tear in 2011. She said it took her sister five years to learn to walk again with a cane. But she's been unable to walk since late July due to hip complications and her CPRS spreading to her dominate wrist, "significantly limiting use of her hand" -- creating another challenge because using a cane may be difficult with this development if or when she's physically able to walk again, Luyster said.

Luyster said her sister's CPRS had also spread to the right side of her head. While she has cochlear implants, she can no longer wear either of them comfortably. The limitations to her wrist has also made it difficult to communicate through sign language.

Since 2020, the county courthouse has been bathed in orange light every year to draw attention to Color the World Orange and CPRS awareness. Jefferson County will be one of 143 locations worldwide to participate this year.

Residents also are asked to wear orange to show support for those afflicted with the condition.
