Two Weirton residents charged in alleged vehicle, copper thefts

WEIRTON -- Two Weirton residents are facing charges in relation to the alleged theft of items from local vehicles, as well as copper from telephone poles in the area.
Jason Michael Sandy, 45, and Judith Kay Kernen, 48, of 3634 Lindberg Way, were taken into custody by Weirton police Thursday following the execution of a search warrant at their residence.
Sandy has been charged with four counts of breaking and entering a nonresidence, along with one count of grand larceny.
Kernen, meanwhile, has been charged with one count of possession of stolen property.
"Over the past week, the Weirton Police Department has received several complaints of items being stolen out of vehicles on Marland Heights," noted a statement issued Thursday evening by Police Chief Charlie Kush.
The investigation led to the search of the Lindberg Way property, where officers report "several of the stolen items were located along with copper stolen from several telephone poles the night before."
According to Kush, all of the charges are categorized as felonies.
Both were arraigned Thursday in Hancock County Magistrate Court, with their next hearing set for Sept. 10 before Magistrate Matthew Harvey.
They are both being held at the West Virginia Northern Regional Jail, online records for which show Sandy also faces a parole violation.
Online records also show Sandy has a total property/surety bond of $6,200, with a $5,000 property/surety bond assessed to Kernen.
