STEUBENVILLE -- It's fall cleanup time for Steubenville residents.
Beginning Friday, Sept. 18, city sanitation crews will be out collecting unwanted household items from residents with active and current utility accounts. All items must be left at the curb where regular trash collection occurs each week and must be placed curbside no sooner than the night before the scheduled collection, officials said. Once the schedule is completed, there will be no return trips, they added.
The fall cleanup collection schedule is:
-- Sept. 18: All streets on Labelle View.
-- Sept. 25: All streets on Pleasant Heights.
-- Oct. 2: In the South End, all streets from Market Street to the south city limit and from Spring Avenue to State Route 7, including Lincoln Heights. In the North End, all streets from Alikanna to Market Street and from 11th Street to State Route 7.
-- Oct. 9: All streets on the north side of Sunset Boulevard from Brady Avenue to the west city limit, including Brady Avenue.
-- Oct. 23: All streets on the south side of Sunset Boulevard from McCauslen Manor to the west city limits.
City officials say the service won't be provided to homeowners who don't have an active and current utility account with the city, who abuse the collections program or try to discard prohibited items.
Crews will not pick up items discarded by or for individuals emptying or nearly emptying the contents of a house or apartment due to eviction, foreclosure, the sale or purchase of a house or apartment, lease termination or an ownership change of a house or apartment. The city manager or his designee will determine whether the volume of items placed out for collection results from emptying or nearly emptying a residence.
The list of prohibited items includes:
-- Tires of any kind.
-- Electronic waste (E-waste), including computers and televisions.
-- Freon gases from appliances, commonly found in items like refrigerators, freezers, air conditioning units and dehumidifiers.
-- Hazardous waste/petrochemicals, including fuels, oils, solvents, paint, etc.
-- Construction material, including shingles, plaster/drywall, concrete, block and bricks.
