Off to the races: Democratic candidates take part in event

FOLLANSBEE -- Voters had an opportunity Thursday to meet some of the Democratic candidates seeking office in November’s election, while enjoying a night at the “races.”

The Hancock County Democratic Executive Committee and Brooke County Democratic Executive Committee hosted a meet-the-candidates event, featuring a horse race-themed fundraiser at the Follansbee Community House.

“The Night at the Races is always a good time to gather together and get to know the candidates,” explained Kathy Link, chair of the Hancock County Democratic Executive Committee.

Four candidates were in attendance at Thursday’s event: Quincy Wilson, candidate for West Virginia House of Delegates, District 1; Shawn Fluharty, who is seeking a seat in representing the First District in the West Virginia Senate; Mike Robinson, who is running for District 3 in the House of Delegates; and Ace Parsi, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives District 2.

Organizers noted there haven’t been many candidates seeking office on the Democrat side of the ticket in recent years, but this year they see several stepping forward in an effort to gain the favor of voters.

“It’s good to see the caliber of candidates we have this year,” said Bernice Pitcock.

Of Thursday’s event, itself, attendees bought tickets and, with assistance from the candidates, placed their bets on the results of various races.

In between races, each candidate would have an opportunity to introduce themselves and give a brief presentation on their campaign.

Link said it is less formal than the typical candidate event, as it allows for more personal interaction between those seeking office and the voters.
