New Cumberland to benefit from $1.2 million street paving project

NEW CUMBERLAND - The City of New Cumberland is receiving a boost in getting the condition of its streets and alleyways addressed.
As part of his tour of the Northern Panhandle this week, West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey made a stop at the New Cumberland City Building, where, surrounded by city officials, area legislators, and local West Virginia Division of Highways employees, he announced funding to be dedicated toward street paving in the community.
"We’re going to be dedicating, from the state, $1.2 million in funding for the streets in the community of New Cumberland," Morrisey announced. "That’s going to get a lot of streets and sidewalks. That’s going to make a big difference."
City officials have been discussing, at several times in recent years, the need to address the condition of various streets and alleys within the New Cumberland city limits.
According to Mayor Will White, this announcement is anticipated to have an impact on every part of the community.
"They’re saying all streets get paved," White explained following Tuesday’s announcement. "It’s fantastic."
WVDOH District 6 Engineer Brian Kucish noted a contractor already has been lined up for the project, and can begin as soon as the DOH receives notification it can proceed.
"He’s ready to go," Kucish said. "We’re hoping to have it done by Thanksgiving."
The governor said he understands the need to have good streets, and intends to hold the project to such a deadline, adding it would be great for the residents to see its completion in time for the holiday season.
"I want to make sure we do it fast," he said.
Morrisey credited area legislators, including state Sen. Laura Wakim Chapman, R-Wheeling, Del. Pat McGeehan, R-Hancock, and Del. Mark Zatezalo, R-Hancock, for their efforts to keep the area on his radar when it comes to assisting the needs of local residents.
"This is a team effort," Morrisey said. "That’s how you get things done."
