Jefferson County Democrats open new downtown office

STEUBENVILLE -- The Jefferson County Democratic Party has opened a new office in downtown Steubenville, giving residents a place to stop in, talk about the issues affecting their families and communities and become more involved in the civic life of Jefferson County.
Although the office will serve as the headquarters of the Jefferson County Democratic Party, Chairman Eddie Abdalla said the doors are open to everyone -- regardless of political affiliation.
“We want this to be a place where people feel comfortable walking through the door,” Abdalla said. “Democrat, Republican or independent -- it doesn’t matter. If you’re concerned about what’s happening in our community, we want to hear what you have to say.”
Abdalla said the goal is to encourage conversations about issues that matter to people locally rather than focusing solely on national partisan politics.
“There is plenty of disagreement in politics today, but that doesn’t mean we have to stop talking to one another,” he said. “We can disagree on politics and still agree that we want good jobs, affordable health care, safe communities, good schools and a strong future for our children and grandchildren.”
The downtown office will provide information about elections and voter registration, serve as a headquarters for Democratic Party activities and provide a location for meetings, community discussions and other events throughout the election season.
But Abdalla said he hopes the office becomes more than a place for political activity.
“We’re proud to be the Jefferson County Democratic Party, and obviously we’re going to continue to work to elect Democrats,” Abdalla said. “But we’re also Jefferson County residents first. We all live in the same communities, shop at the same stores, send our kids and grandchildren to the same schools and want to see this area succeed. That’s something Democrats, Republicans and independents can all agree on.”
Residents are invited to stop by the office, meet with members of the Jefferson County Democratic Party and share their thoughts and concerns about issues facing the county.
“We’re opening the door and we’re inviting people in,” Abdalla said. “Come in and talk to us. You don’t have to agree with us. You just have to care about Jefferson County.”
The Jefferson County Democratic Party office is located at 124 N. Fourth St. It will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays through the end of September and Monday through Friday beginning in October. For information, call (740) 346-9922.
