WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Board of Education has begun the process of seeking a new member following the recent death of Antoinette Perkins.
Perkins died Sept. 14 at the age of 75. In July, she began her 10th year as a member of the board of education and was selected to lead it as the board president.
The school board met in special session Wednesday night, where Dr. Robert Marks was approved to fill the president role, with Kristin Newton approved to serve as vice president.
The board also agreed to accept letters of interest from individuals interested in an appointment to the vacant school board seat.
According to a posting made available both through the Brooke County Schools website and social media accounts "Letters of interest and resumes will be accepted beginning September 24, 2026, and must be received no later than 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2026."
To be eligible for the seat, an individual must be a resident of either the Follansbee District or Weirton District of Brooke County, as well as meet requirements established under West Virginia Code 18-5-1a, including being a citizen of the United States and a resident of Brooke County, possession a high school diploma or GED, not be employed by the Brooke County Board of Education, and may not have been convicted of abuse, neglect or sexual abuse of a minor child.
The individual selected will be required to undergo a criminal background check at their expense.
