Brooke board sets temporary fees for Hope Scholarship students

WELLSBURG -- Members of the Brooke County Board of Education approved numerous expenditures, several overnight and day trips for employee training and numerous parent volunteers during their Aug. 24 meeting.
The board also approved a temporary fee schedule for students who receive the state's Hope Scholarship and want to enroll in specific classes or activities in the district.
The temporary plan will allow district officials to provide a fee amount to parents who want to enroll their children in a class or activity before permanent procedures are put into place.
Superintendent Jeffrey Crook explained that the fees are required under state law, which says districts shall require Hope Scholarship students to pay for classes they want to take, athletics in which they want to participate and extracurricular activities, such as playing in the band or participating in a club.
Board members also:
-- Voted to renew Carnegie Learning, a middle school math curriculum, for the current school year at a cost of $34,500.
-- Approved a request from Steve Mitchell, the district's maintenance foreman, to accept the bid from Standard Air and Lite Corp. of Pittsburgh for $16,920 for a Carrier rooftop HVAC unit for Jefferson Intermediate School.
-- Voted to renew a contract with HUDL Inc. for sports-related technology for $16,000, with $11,000 to be paid from county athletic funds and $5,000 from athletic donations.
-- Voted to continue an agreement with the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and Blind public school partnership.
-- Approved a request to continue an agreement with Birth to Three.
-- Voted to continue the district's contract with Best Life Therapy for the current school year. All expenses will be paid from the special education grant and county funds.
-- Approved the purchase of the Unique Learning Curriculum for grades K-12 from Everyway for $8,081.91, to be paid from the special education grant.
-- Approved a request from Corey Murphy, deputy superintendent, to post a preschool special needs teacher position at Brooke High School for the current school year.
-- Approved a request from Murphy to post an early childhood classroom assistant preschool teacher position at Brooke High School for the current school year.
The board's next meeting will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 10.
