On Friday, the nation remembered the day - 25 years ago - when terrorists backed by al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airliners, leading to the worst domestic terror attack in U.S. history. Two of the hijacked planes would be crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, destroying the building, another would go into the Pentagon, while the fourth would be crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pa., after passengers and crew fought back. The attacks resulted in the loss of almost 3,000 lives. This monument, located in the Brooke-Hancock Veterans Memorial Park in Weirton, stands in memory of those who lost their lives. Dedicated May 30, 2002, it contains portions of steel beams from the World Trade Center, which had been among those sent to Weirton Steel Corp. for recycling and use in the former company's steelmaking.
