STEUBENVILLE -- City Engineer Mike Dolak said the University Boulevard/U.S. 22 East ramp from State Route 7 north is temporarily closed while he determines how long it will take to repair damage caused by a two-car collision Saturday at the marina entrance.
Police allege a northbound driver, identified as Samuel Byrom, of New Comerstown, Ohio, "ran the red light" and crashed into the passenger side of a southbound vehicle, severely damaging both vehicles and destroying the signal box that controls the traffic light, as well as the railroad crossing bars.
Until it is working again, Dolak said motorists traveling northbound to University Boulevard or Veterans Memorial Bridge (U.S. 22 East) will have to detour to John Scott Highway and circle back.
"We're trying to get a contractor in Monday to look at it," Dolak said. "The signal box was destroyed -- those cost around $80,000 to replace. It's a sophisticated (device) with a battery backup."
Until a contractor looks at it, Dolak said it is impossible to know if any of the mechanisms inside the box can be saved.
"I'll have a better idea tomorrow," he said.
Police cited Byrom for a red-light violation and driving without a license. A passenger in his vehicle was taken to Trinity West for treatment, they said.
