NEW CUMBERLAND -- The Oak Glen community is grieving the loss of one of its own.
Hancock County deputies are investigating a fatal all-terrain vehicle crash which claimed the life of Carter "Boo Boo" Pesacreta, 16, of Newell, Friday afternoon.
The Sheriff's Department reports that deputies responded to a call at approximately 2:30 p.m. Friday on Wylie Ridge Road, near the intersection of Anderson Lane, for an ATV crash. Preliminary investigations indicate Pesacreta lost control of the vehicle, resulting in it leaving the roadway and rolling over an embankment.
"It's terrible news," Hancock County Superintendent Walter Saunders said following Monday's meeting of the county board of education.
Hancock County Schools, in offering support to the students, had counselors and social workers at both Oak Glen High School and the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center.
"We did work with our staff to bring in counselors," Saunders said. "We did want to make those available to do what we could do on our end during this terrible time."
In remembrance, some area high schools, including Oak Glen, Weir and Brooke, have organized a "Blue and Gold" day, to be observed today, with students, faculty and staff encouraged to wear the Oak Glen colors.
Donations also are being accepted to assist the Pesacreta family, both through the schools and a GoFundMe.
He was the son of David and Whitney (Staffileno) Pesacreta, of Newell, and a member of the Oak Glen varsity football team.
Funeral arrangements are being made through Nixon Funeral Home, with visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday.
