Brooke County Schools staff ready for first day

WELLSBURG -- Students are returning to the classrooms this week, and that makes it a special time of the year for Jeffrey Crook.
The Brooke County superintendent said it is always surrounded by a lot of anticipation.
“We report back (today) and we’re extremely excited to have all of our staff back. Then, the kids start back on Thursday,” he said while speaking toward the end of the Aug. 10 school board meeting.
“The greatest thing about being in education is that we have another grand opening for school every single year,” Crook added. “Everybody starts anew, everybody starts fresh and we are just looking forward to a great, great school year.”
During the meeting, board members:
• Approved the renewal of 30 Imagine Sonday System Online licenses for $13,900, to be paid from Title 1 and general funds;
• Approved the renewal of six Imagine Sonday System 1 Dual Kits for $12,736.75 and one onsite training for $3,500 to be paid from Title 1 and general funds;
• Granted permission to renew meal contract agreements with Northern Panhandle Head start and Little Bear Day Care for the 2026-27 school years;
• Approved a contract renewal with Droplet Form Management Software for $23,900, to be paid from the technology budget;
• Approved the renewal of a contract with E-Rate Central for $13,000 to be paid from the technology budget;
• Approved the purchase of the Art of Education for Brooke High School students in grades nine-12 for $18,775.02, to be paid from Step7 and general funds;
• Agreed to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the Greater Wheeling Coalition for the Homeless;
• Approved several overnight or day trips for student activities or employee training;
• Accepted the resignations of Kimberly Kerr, bus operator; Frankie Roberts, third-grade teacher at Franklin Intermediate School; Brittany Hanes, a substitute teacher; and Barbara Hernandez, ELA teacher at Brooke Middle School; and
• Approved Braydon DeMaria (coaching, wrestling and cross country) and Phillip Casinelli (noncoaching football) as high school athletic volunteers, and DeMaria (coaching, wrestling and cross country) as a middle school athletic volunteer.
The board’s next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Brooke County Board of Education office, 1201 Pleasant Ave.
