Weirton Council considering changes to residential recycling program

By CRAIG HOWELL 2 min read

WEIRTON - Weirton Council will have several matters to consider when it convenes tonight, including some minor adjustments to the city's recycling regulations.

Council will meet at 7 p.m. today in the council chambers of the Weirton Municipal Building, with an agenda to include the second reading of Ordinance 2280, amending Article 972.05 of city code which regulates "Mandatory Recycling."

The ordinance amends Section A of the article, deleting a reference to July 1, 1993 as the start of the city's residential recycling program.

It also removes "newspapers" and "glass bottles and jars" from the listing of materials accepted through the residential recycling program.

If approved, the section in question would then read: "All persons who occupy residential premises, including owners, lessees, tenants or licensees, shall separate the following types of recyclable materials produced by such residents for collection and recycling: aluminum cans, corrugated cardboard, pourable containers, tin/bi-metal/steel cans."

The article would continue to stipulate that yard waste "must be separated from recyclable material produced by such residents for collection and recycling: leaves, grass, brush/tree trimmings and Christmas trees."

The matter received a unanimous approval to its first reading in June. If approved, the amendment would become effective 30 days following the second reading.

Other matters set for a second reading by Weirton Council tonight are:

An ordinance establishing a no parking area on the south side of Gullette Lane, for a distance of 230 feet beginning at Freedom Way;

An ordinance which would establish a fine for improperly parking in spaces designated for recipients of the Purple Heart.
