NEW CUMBERLAND -- The Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce brought a taste of the holidays to the Upper Ohio Valley Thursday, presenting its annual Christmas in July Golf Scramble.
Twenty-two teams came out in support of the event, hitting the course on a cool, clear day.
"It's been a really good day at Mountaineer's Woodview Golf Course," noted Weirton Chamber President Brenda Mull.
Mull offered thanks to the scramble's sponsors, including main sponsor WVU Medicine Weirton Medical Center.
Food, including sandwiches on the course and a dinner after the event, was provided by Giometti Catering.
Proceeds from the event support Chamber programs, including upkeep of the community Christmas light displays.
The day included a traditional scramble format for four-person groups, along with skill games such as putting contests and an attempt for golfers to test their accuracy by trying to hit their ball into one of a series of rings.
It wouldn't be a Christmas in July event without an appearance from Santa Claus, as the jolly one greeted many teams as they made their way along the greens.
The event also provided an opportunity for golfers to become acquainted with new business Hosel Rockets Golf Center, which will offer indoor golf simulators when it opens in Weirton in the coming weeks.
Mull offered thanks to Brandon Palmeri, chairman of the Chamber's Special Projects Committee, and the volunteers who assisted with planning and operating the scramble.
"Brandon and everyone who came out to help made this successful," Mull said.
Mull noted the annual golf scramble is among the Chamber's favorite events and said she has received positive feedback about this year's outing.
"We appreciate it. We're glad everyone had a good time," she said.
