WEIRTON – With the Independence Day holiday fast approaching, organizers of Weirton’s Fourth of July parade are issuing a reminder to those who may be interested in taking part.
Set to follow its traditional route along the city’s Main Street, this year’s parade will take place at 5 p.m., July 4, featuring a theme of “America 250.”
Applications continue to be accepted for floats, mini-floats, decorated vehicles, specialty units, bands and more.
“We have a handful in, so far,” Programs Director Chris Krishak said during Thursday’s meeting of the Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation.
Floats can be no higher than 12 feet 6 inches, while mini-floats may include anything not professionally produced. Decorated vehicles may include antique cars, business representatives or special dignitaries.
Specialty units include military personnel, first responders, decorated bicycles, wagons, four-wheelers, go-carts, horses and more.
“I’m reaching out to previous participants,” Krishak added, noting officials are hoping for a grand turnout of participants in honor of the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration.
For more information, including how to obtain an application, contact Krishak at 304-797-5721.
While the parade will begin at its usual location of Virginia Avenue, Parks Director Coty Shingle noted different arrangements will be needed for the pre-parade lineup given the ongoing demolition and construction on the overhead bridge just north of the area.
“It’s a little more important that they pre-register,” Shingle explained, pointing out that having participants sign up ahead of time will give organizers a better idea of the number of participants and types of units to assist in their placement on Virginia Avenue and nearby streets.
The parade will be the kickoff of Weirton’s Independence Day festivities on July 4, with an evening of games, vendors, live music, a car show and more, all planned by the city, culminating in a fireworks display at approximately 10 p.m.
