WEIRTON — Members of the Weirton Lions Club and their guests recently gathered to honor an individual exemplifying service and commitment to the community and beyond.
This year’s Heart of the Lion Award was presented to Holly Greaver during a dinner held at Giovanni’s Restaurant on May 19.
The Heart of the Lion Award is given in recognition of an individual who exemplifies the qualities of service and commitment to their family, their church or spiritual affiliation and their local community, as well as concern for the people of the world.
The recipient is not a member of the Lions Club but someone who shares the same concern and heart for service to those in need as Lions members. The total membership of the Weirton Lions nominates individuals who meet that desire to serve and then chooses the recipient of the honor. This is the fourth year of the program, with past recipients including Nick Tranto, Gene Hunt and Tom Banketas.
Greaver was born and raised in Weirton, attended Brooke County Schools and West Virginia Northern Community College. She obtained associate degrees from WVNCC in business and accounting and currently is studying at the University of the Cumberlands for a bachelor’s degree in missions and ministry with a goal of becoming a pastor.
She works full time at Industrial Scientific with 18 years of service and attends the United Methodist Church on West Street, where she teaches Sunday School, is chairperson of the Church Administrative Council and is a member of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee. She runs the church’s food pantry and clothes closet and is currently working on this summer’s Vacation Bible School.
Greaver is married to Pete Greaver and has a daughter, Rianna, and a grandson, Archer.
Her pastor, Kyle Ashley, gave the invocation at the dinner. Past Lions President John Porco explained the program and gave a brief Lions history for those in attendance. Past District Governor Bill Syphers of the Wheeling Island Lions Club presented the award and current Lions President and Past District Governor Gary Pitcock presented a monetary donation to her that will go to the charity of her choice.
