Council honors Steubenville’s trailblazers in resolution

Councilman Royal Mayo, right, presents a resolution celebrating the achievements of Steubenville’s African-American residents, including brothers Jerome and John Edwards, fighter pilots flying with the famed Tuskegee Airmen in World War II, and Moses Fleetwood Walker, who in 1884 was the first Black baseball player to play professionally. The resolution was a continuation of the community’s recent Juneteenth festivities, marking the date 161 years ago when slaves in Galveston, TX finally learned they’d been freed.
