Wednesdays are for superheroes in Wintersville
WINTERSVILLE — Superheroes will be taking to the streets of the village for the June installment of Wednesdays in Wintersville.
“That is the theme this month,” said Joel John, owner of Exquisite Creations by Joel and chairperson of the group that coordinates the monthly street fair along Main Street in the village.
“We’re doing a couple of different takes on superheroes,” he added while speaking about the event, which will run from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. “For example, what we are looking for in our memorabilia display is sports memorabilia. We’re looking for any level of sports memorabilia to put on display.”
Memorabilia can be viewed at the Center for Hope at Wintersville Methodist Church, he said. Persons who have an item they might want to see included can contact (740) 632-6572, John explained.
The church, as always, will serve as home for the kids zone, John said. In addition to the memorabilia, the kids zone will include a teen makers market and the superhero costume contest at 6 p.m. There also will be bounce houses, he said.
“The makers market is open to anyone 21 and under who has things that they make themselves,” John said. “It helps to promote young entrepreneurs.”
The costume contest, John said, will have a different feature. Children are being asked to dress as anyone they consider to be a superhero. That could include first responders, police officers, nurses — anyone they feel can fill that role.
For information about the makers market, call (740) 632-1203, and for information about the costume contest, call (740) 317-5577.
Food trucks will be stationed in the area around Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, John said. Area vendors will be on hand for the evening, as well.
The theme for this month’s food contest is barbecue sauce — and it is open to everyone, from individuals to businesses.
“If you own a business and think you have the best sauce, bring it,” he said.
For details, he added, contact (740) 381-3261.
JEL will be performing at the lounge area behind Exquisite Creations between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. That’s where attendees will be able to find the Knotty Pint Mobile Bar.
The evening will conclude with an outdoor showing of the 2025 film “Dog Man.” Area residents are encouraged to relax and enjoy the film, which is being shown by the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County as part of the Ohio Goes to the Movies series and the state’s America 250 celebration.
Scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. at the Edward P. Laman Community Dog Park, the PG-rated animated film tells the story of the title character as he defends Ohkay City from the supervillain cat Petey. It features the voices of Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher, Lucas Hopkins Calderon and Ricky Gervais. Peter Hastings, who wrote and directed the film, provides vocal effects for Dog Man.
The story is based on the graphic novel series by Dav Pilkey.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own seating — blankets or chairs — and wear their favorite superhero costume. Children will get a free goodie bag, while supplies last. Popcorn will be available, John added.
“The film is the first of two outdoor movies that we’re showing as part of Ohio Goes to the Movies,” said Jennifer Cesta, public relations coordinator for the library system. “Movies are scheduled at each library branch, but partnering with Wednesdays in Wintersville and Historic Fort Steuben has allowed us to further strengthen community connections beyond the bookshelves.”
“The Rescuers” will be shown at the fort on Sept. 19.
“The America 250-Ohio project is a great way to showcase movies the connect to our state — whether it was by the actors, locations, directors or composers,” Cesta added.
John said the organizers are excited about the addition of the outdoor movie, adding it is the first attempt to extend the activities beyond the usual 8:30 p.m. ending time. It’s a great extension of the work the library does around the county, he added.
In the event of rain Wednesday, organizers said the showing will be moved to inside Wintersville Methodist Church.
The May 6 installment of Wednesdays in Wintersville was canceled because of a combination of rain early in the day and colder-than-normal temperatures.
“Unfortunately, it wasn’t just the rain,” John explained. “It was the cold, too. We appreciate everyone’s patience. We’re trying to be kind to our vendors, too.”
Creegan’s Windows Plus is the sponsor for the June event, he added.
Organizers have a lot of activities planned for the July 1 edition, which will be built around the theme of Red, White and Boom, John said, adding they expect to have two days of activities centered around the nation’s 250th birthday
