Uncontested candidates move on

STEUBENVILLE — There were no contested races at the county level in Tuesday’s primary election, and there likely will be just one in the Nov. 3 general election.

That one race will be for the Jan. 1 Jefferson County commissioner seat. Incumbent Eric Timmons of Steubenville was unchallenged while seeking the Republican nomination for the post. He will face Brent G. Nemeth of Rayland, who was unchallenged while seeking the Democratic nomination, in November.

Incumbent county Auditor E.J. Conn of Bloomingdale had no challengers for the Republican nomination for that position. No Democrat filed for the post.

Incumbent Common Pleas Judge Michelle Garcia Miller of Rayland was unchallenged in her bid for the Democratic nomination for the Jan. 1 post. No Republican filed for the post.

Michael C. Bednar of Wintersville was unopposed for the Democratic nomination for the Feb. 9 seat on common pleas court. No Republican filed for the position.

No candidate from either party filed for the probate and juvenile division judge’s spot. Incumbent Frank Noble has filed for the post as an independent, the Jefferson County Board of Elections said Tuesday afternoon.

According to the office of Secretary of State Frank LaRose, as of noon Tuesday, 929 of the 1,021 absentee ballots that had been requested had been returned to the Jefferson County Board of Elections. Absentee ballots had to have been returned to the board before 7:30 p.m. to be counted.

That return rate of 92 percent was greater than the state’s overall rate of 85 percent.

The secretary of state’s office also reported 1,768 early in-person ballots had been cast in Jefferson County.

There were 42,669 registered voters in Jefferson County, the secretary of state’s office said.

The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 3 election is Oct. 5.
