Steubenville American Legion Argonne Post 33 Friday donated $5,000 to the East Garfield Elementary School PTO. The money will go toward the school’s end of the year party, which will include inflatables and an ice cream truck. Joining third-graders from the school for the presentation were, from left, Terry Channel, first vice commander; Joe Holliday, service officer; Commander Joe Rockey; and Tricia Saccoccia, the school’s principal. Jennifer Blackburn, the school’s reading coordinator, explained that Garfield was one of 109 schools across the state to be honored with an Ohio Governor’s Science of Reading Champions Award. The program was developed to recognize schools that demonstrate strong implementation of evidence-based instructional practices aligned to the science of reading and where students are making significant progress.
